We will be meeting at 10.00 a.m. at the entrance in Woodland Way and the tasks planned for the day are as follows:
(1) To scythe/cut back the vegetation from around the whips planted in the 3rd coppiced area and check the survival rate following this Summer's drought. A total of 180 whips were planted consisting of 130 Hazel whips, 40 Hornbeam whips and 10 Field Maple whips.
(2) To also check the survival rate of the whips planted in the 4th newly coppiced area. A total of 180 whips were planted there consisting of 100 Hazel whips, 20 Downey Birch, 10 Pedunculate (English) Oak whips, 10 Field Maple whips, 10 Hornbeam whips, 10 Small-leaved Lime whips and 20 Wild Cherry whips. Checking the survival rates of the individual species will indicate how much replanting will need to be done this Autumn.
It is worth mentioning that all the above whips were generously donated by CGi and planted with the help of CGi volunteers as were the whips planted in the first two coppiced areas.
(3) To carry on mowing the bottom path using the Metro Mower.
(4) To identify the next area for coppicing ready for removing trees before the Winter sets in.
Any help you can give with the above no matter how much or how little is always very much appreciated - an hour or two of your time can make all the difference as to whether the task(s) planned for the day get done. As usual FoF will be providing all the necessary tools for the task but please would you bring your own gloves and tools (shears and loppers) if you have them. Please would you also bring your own wipes and hand gel as well as your own refreshments. Please also remember to wear long trousers/jeans to avoid getting bitten by ticks but FoF’s First Aid kit does contain tick removers if needed.
