Work day: 23/02/2022 (Wednesday)

When Anthony ordered the 12 Hornbeam whips for the Cubs to plant on the last work day 40 Box (Buxus sempervirens) plants were also delivered to him in error and the supplier didn’t want them returned to him and said Anthony could keep them probably because the supplier was finding it difficult to sell the plants due to the fact that Box is being devastated by two new pests Box Blight and Box Caterpillar. The result is that these plants need to be planted out as soon as possible but spread out individually around the wood to minimize any attack by these two pests. As there are only a limited number of suitable planting sites in the wood Anthony is going to offer some of the plants to other groups so hopefully there will fewer for FoF to plant on the work day depending on how many he manages to off-load.

The plan is to meet at 10.00 a.m. at the entrance in Woodland Way and Anthony will supervise the planting in the various areas he has identified as being suitable. As Box has a bushy growth a decision has been taken not to protect them with tree guards so no staking will be necessary. Depending on the number to be planted and the time available it may also be possible to do some strimming  and raking along the bottom path where bramble has taken over some previously planted areas. It is also possible that some path clearing may need to be done following storms Dudley and Eunice.

Although the regulations relating to the Omicron situation have been relaxed it probably best if you continue to bring your own gloves and tools (shears, loppers and spades) if you have them but as usual a selection of FoF tools will be available for those who need them. Please would you also bring your own wipes and hand gel as well as your own refreshments. Please also remember to wear long trousers/jeans to avoid getting bitten by ticks but FoF’s First Aid kit does contain tick removers if needed.

Bill will be supervising the work day so please would you kindly let Bill know if you’re able to make the work day – many thanks.
