The Sheep are back!

13th April 2023, by Andrew Wood

The sheep arrived on Wednesday 5th April - 3 Beulahs and 1 Herdwick. Apparently the Herdwick is nicknamed ‘Silverback’ and is best mates with largest of the Beulahs. The salt lick has a shelter around it to protect it from the rain - the Grazing Project Officer for the Downlands Partnership, Sean Grufferty, of says that the price of salt licks has doubled since last year and the shelter will prevent rain from washing it away.

The sheep are part of a long-term effort to return the field to chalk grassland and Friends of Foxley volunteers will be checking on their welfare every day. Dog walkers - please keep your dogs on leads near the sheep. Few domestic dogs, however friendly, are used to livestock and problems have been caused in the past here and at other local grazing locations.
